HOUSTON COUNTY

    This County, created by Acts of the Legis-

    lature May 15 & December 24, 1821, is named

    for John Houston, Governor in 1778 & 1784,

    who served in the Continental Congress in

        1775 & '76. In 1774 he called the first

    meeting of the Sons of Liberty and served

    as Chairman. As Governor he invaded East

    Florida with Maj. Gen. Robert Howe in an un-

    successful attempt to take St. Augustine from

    The British. Among the first County Officers

    were: Sheriff Edmund C. Beard, Clerk of Su-

    perior Court Alexander McCarty, Clerk of

    Inferior Court Lawson I. Keener, Coroner Henry

        Audulph and Surveyor Simon Harrell.
