Journal Entry on Eye Glasses
In Richmond County, Gertrude Thomas, who loved to read and write, discovered a way to help herself with these activities, as she recorded in her journal:
“… I am writing for the first time with a pair of eye glasses. Sis Anne gave them to me. I find that I cannot see to read at night especially the local column of the Chronicle and Constitutionalist [Augusta newspapers] which is printed in very fine type. I am writing in the school room, in the afternoon. It is a bright cheerful room this season of the year… .”
