William Schley Born

William Schley was born in Frederick, Maryland. In 1835, Schley was elected governor of Georgia and served one two-year term. In 1857, the General Assembly created a new county in southwest Georgia and named it for the former governor and congressman. Schley died in Augusta on Nov. 20, 1858.
