Catoosa and Pickens Couties Created

Gov. Herschel Johnson approved acts creating Catoosa County and Pickens County. Catoosa County, Georgia’s 100th, was created from portions of Walker and Whitfield counties and named for Catoosa Springs, which took its name from the Cherokee Indians. Pickens County, Georgia’s 101st, was created from portions of Cherokee and Gilmer counties and named for colonel and ultimately general Andrew Pickens, who was active in fighting British forces in Georgia’s backcountry during the American Revolution.
