Jimmy Carter Elected President

Jimmy Carter was elected President of the United States, defeating incumbent Gerald Ford. Carter won the popular vote 51 to 48 percent, while winning 23 states and the District of Columbia, giving him 297 electoral votes (270 were needed to win). Carter became the first president born in the Deep South since Reconstruction.
