Braves Traded for Smoltz

The Atlanta Braves were floundering in the National League standings, while the Detroit Tigers were contending for the American League championship. So on this day the Braves sent their best pitcher at the time - Doyle Alexander - to the Tigers in exchange for a young prospect who threw hard, but had struggled some with his control in the minor leagues. That young prospect would go to be star pitcher for the Braves in the their glory decade of the 1990s. His name was John Smoltz.
