Eddie Mathews Named Manager

After firing Atlanta Braves manager Luman Harris, team officials named former Braves third baseman and Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews as skipper of the struggling franchise. Mathews would lead the Braves for two years, though the team would continue to lose more games than it won. A highlight of Mathews’ time as Braves manager was watching Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run in 1974. Four years later, Mathews was elected to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.
