Olympics Day 12, Centennial Park Re-opened

This was the twelfth day of the 1996 Summer Olympics - and day 11 of Olympic competition. In downtown Atlanta, the Olympic Centennial Park reopened three days after the bombing, but everyone had a somber demeanor out of respect for the two deaths and 111 wounded, as well as concern over the possibiliy of other bombings - especially since there were no clues as to the identity and motivation of the bomber. The competition continued, and on this day U.S. gold medal winners were the women’s softball team and Kendall Cross in men’s bantamweight freestyle wrestling. In Athens, Ga., Argentina beat Portugal in the semi-final round of men’s soccer playing in Sanford Stadium on the University of Georgia campus.
