Civil War Stamps Issued

The U.S. Postal Service released a set of 20 Civil War commemorative stamps. Three of the stamps featured Georgia-related subjects: Georgia-born Cherokee Indian and Confederate general Stand Watie, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston (who commanded most of the Confederate defense during Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign and who later was Confederate commander for Georgia and the Carolinas), and Gen. William T. Sherman (who in 1844 as a young Army officer was stationed in Marietta for six weeks but is better remembered for his march through Georgia 20 years later).
