Newt Gingrich Born

Newt Gingrich was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Son of an Army officer, Newt lived in Kansas, France, and Germany before moving to Columbus, Georgia, where he graduated from high school in 1961. After earning a Ph.D. in European History from Tulane in 1971, Gingrich joined the political science faculty of West Georgia College. In November 1978, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where in 1995 and again in 1997, the Republican majority elected him as Speaker of the House.
