First Ad for Coca-Cola

Three weeks earlier - on May 8 - John Pemberton had sold the first glass of Coca-Cola at the soda fountain of Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta. Today, he ran the first advertisement for Coca- Cola in the Atlanta Journal. Pemberton subsequently had a more persuasive ad run in the newspaper. The new ad repeated the first ad’s depiction of Coca-Cola as “delicious, exhilarating, refreshing and invigorating” but touted Coca-Cola as an “Intellectual Beverage,” a “Temperance Drink,” a “Brain Tonic,” and “a cure for all nervous affections - Sick Head-Ache, Neuralgia, Hysteria, Melancholy, &c.
