Fort Benning Protest Ended

A ten-day protest on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to close the U.S. Army School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia ended. The facility, which trains Latin American soldiers and police in military and law-enforcement tactics, has attracted protests by human rights activists since it moved to Fort Benning from Panama in 1984. In 2001, the school was renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation and transferred to the U.S. Department of Defense. However, it is still popularly known as the School of the Americas and human rights protestors annually hold a protest demonstration at the gates of Fort Benning.
