Department of Labor Created

Gov. E.D. Rivers signed an act of the General Assembly abolishing the Department of Industrial Relations and creating in its place a new Department of Labor. The act also provided for a Commissioner of Labor to be elected by the voters of the state. Later, the Constitution of 1945 elevated the Commissioner of Labor from the status of statutory to constitutional officer.
