Gooding v. Wilson

In a split decision in the case of Gooding v. Wilson, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a Georgia statute making unprovoked use of “opprobrious words or abusive language, tending to cause a breach of the peace” a misdemeanor crime was unconstitutionally vague in violation of the 1st and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
