First Masters Began in Augusta

The first Masters golf championship began in Augusta, Georgia, although initially it was entitled the Augusta National Golf Club Invitation Tournament. Georgia’s most famous golf championship was won three days later by Horton Smith. For his victory, Smith received a total of $1,500 in prize money.
