James Deshler Born

Confederate general James Deshler was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. After graduating from West Point in 1854, Deshler served cavalry duty in the West. In 1861, he resigned his U.S. Army commission to become an artillery captain and later colonel in Confederate service. In July 1863, Deshler was promoted to brigadier general and given command of his own brigade in Cleburne’s Division. He was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on Sept. 20, 1863.
