Pontoons Delayed by Sniper Fire
The Army of the Potomac started laying the pontoon bridges across the Rappahannock River. Confederate sniper fire delayed the construction, so the Union forces began artillery fire in an attempt to force the Confederate gunmen out of the town of Fredericksburg. Unable to do so, Union infantry then crossed the river in boats and were able to force the Confederates back to their defensive positions on the heights behind Fredericksburg.
