Howell Cobb Resigned, Augustus Longstreet Letter
Prominent Georgian Howell Cobb resigned as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. He had been a strong Unionist as a Democrat, but with the election of Abraham Lincoln he no longer believed the Union could be saved, and had published a letter to the people of Georgia two days earlier, explaining his thoughts on the condition of the country. The Daily Federal Union of Milledgeville published another article from Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, again strongly urging secession.
