November 30, 1860

Lincoln Letter to Alexander Stephens

Abraham Lincoln and Alexander Stephens had served together in Congress, and at this point, considered themselves friends. On this day Lincoln wrote a letter to Stephens, indicating he had read Stephens’ speech before the Georgia General Assembly on November 14, and evidently approved of it:

Springfield, Illinois, November 30, 1860

Hon. Alexander H. Stephens.

My dear sir: I have read in the newspapers your speech recently delivered (I think) before the Georgia legislature, or its assembled members. If you have revised it, as is probable, I shall be much obliged if you will send me a copy. Your very truly,

A. Lincoln
