Battle of Ringgold Gap
The Battle of Ringgold Gap took place. Union forces were in pursuit of the retreating Confederates after the Battle of Chattanooga. But Confederate General Patrick Cleburne set his lone division along a ridge in Ringgold Gap, near a railroad crossing. Despite five hours of assaults from three separate Union divisions, Cleburne’s Confederates held the line, allowing the other Confederate forces to congregate to the south in Dalton, Georgia.
