Town of Fredericksburg Asked to Surrender
Union General Ambrose Burnside called on the town of Fredericksburg to surrender to the Army of the Potomac. The town’s mayor asked for time to move the elderly, sick, and women from the town, to which Burnside agreed. But the town was not his primary concern; waiting on the heights above the town was half of the Army of Northern Virginia - the corps commanded by native Georgian James Longstreet.
