Battle of Campbell’s Station

The Battle of Campbell’s Station, in Tennessee, took place. Confederate General James Longstreet had departed Chattanooga and hoped to catch the Union army that had occupied Knoxville out their entrenchments in the city. Campbell’s Station was a crossroads which Longstreet hoped to reach and cut off the Union army from Knoxville. But the Union forces barely reached Campbell’s Station first. Longstreet attacked - led by fellow Georgian General Lafayette McLaws - but could not turn the Union line. The Union did army did retreat, but in order, and was able to return to their fortifications in Knoxville safely. This was a relatively minor engagement, with less than one thousand total casualties.
