This Day in Georgia Civil War History
November 06, 1861
Confederate Election 1861
On this day voters of Georgia, and all the other seceded southern states, went to the polls to officially elect Jefferson Davis as president and Alexander Stephens of Georgia as vice president of the Confederate States of America. Both had been elected to head the provisional government in February of 1861. The presidential term under the Confederate Constitution was for six years.
The Southern Watchman of Athens encouraged all voters to get out and show their support for the Confederate government.
Ironically, Abraham Lincoln had been elected President of the United States on the same day in 1860.
