Grant Departed for Chattanooga

Ulysses S. Grant left Alabama to take command of the Union troops in Chattanooga. The only road into the city was muddy, with a stench from the dead animals on the sides. This was the only road by which the Union had been able to supply the troops besieged in Chattanooga.
