Black Union Soldiers Played Key Role in Virginia Operation
In a series of attacks culminating on this day in Virginia, Union forces north of Richmond were able to extend their left flank. This forced the Confederates to move troops from the defense of Petersburg (to the south of Richmond), weakening the besieged Petersburg defenders, and also cut communication lines southwest of Richmond and Petersburg. Black soldiers in the Union army played a major role in this offensive.
