Jefferson Davis Arrived for Briefing
Confederate President Jefferson Davis arrived in Palmetto, Georgia, for a briefing from General John Bell Hood on the status of his efforts to reverse the Union invasion of Georgia. Hood had little good news to offer, so Davis tried to boost the morale of the troops and that evening was entertained by a band composed of Louisiana troops. Hood did ask for permission to relieve native Georgian General William J. Hardee from duty, apparently holding him responsible for the loss at the Battle of Jonesboro. In fact, Hardee and his men had fought courageously against overwhelming odds.
