Artillery Practice Witnessed

A Georgia soldier in North Carolina wrote in his diary of witnessing some target practice on the water.

“…To-day (25th) we had the extreme pleasure of seeing the artilleryman practice shooting at an object placed in the channel of the sound, a distance of three miles. First they fired a blank cartridge from each gun, it being the first time they had ever shot a canon. Next they fired shot and shell at the buoy, and some came very near it…” Source: Clyde G.
