Hood Responded to Sherman on Moving Citizens

Confederate General John Bell Hood had received a letter from Union General William T. Sherman the previous day, proclaiming that Sherman was moving all the citizens out of Atlanta and expected Hood to help transport them from south of the city. On this day, Hood replied that he had little choice but to do so, then added the following:

“And now sir, permit me to say that the unprecedented measure you propose transcends, in studied and ingenious cruelty, all acts ever before brought to my attention in the dark history of this war. In the name of God and humanity I protest, and believe you will find yourself wrong in thus expelling from their homes and firesides the wives and children of a brave people.”
