Mob “Justice” Reported From Atlanta

The Richmond Times Dispatch reported on a scene of mob “justice” in Atlanta.

Mob in Atlanta, Ga. –The Atlanta Gazette says that one night last week a negro man offered a gross insult to the wife of a Captain now in the Confederate service, and was arrested by the police and put in the calaboose. Shortly after a crowd came and demanded the negro, but the police sternly refused to deliver him up, until a crowbar was sent for to break open the door. The parties then took the negro out, and lost him somewhere with a rope around his neck. Like the subject of recognition, he was in suspense. The negro belonged to a widow lady. Every one will concede the justice of his doom, while they may have serious objections to the manner in which he met it. He richly deserved hanging.
