Maryland Campaign Began

On this day General Robert E. Lee led the Army of Northern Virginia north to attempt an invasion of the Union. They crossed the Potomac River into Maryland which, Lee hoped, would rise in support of secession. This initiated the Maryland Campaign, which would culminate with the Battle of Antietam.
