Battle of Jonesboro Began
South of Atlanta, Confederate forces under native Georgian General William J. Hardee charged Union forces just after 3:00 p.m., starting the Battle of Jonesboro. The Confederates did not realize the full strength of the Union forces - in less than an hour, the Confederates suffered 1400 casualties, with many more being captured. Even before hearing the bad news from Jonesboro, Confederate General John Bell Hood ordered some of the corps out of Jonesboro and brought back to Atlanta.
