Battle of Lovejoy’s Station

The Battle of Lovejoy’s Station took place. Union cavalry had been on a mission to destroy railroads to the south of Atlanta, hoping to interrupt Confederate supply lines. They had been successful on the two previous days, but on this day were met at Lovejoy’s station by Confederate troops General Patrick Cleburne. A fight ensued, which lasted into the night. Finally, the Union forces were forced to retreat to avoid being encircled by Cleburne’s forces. While they had destroyed some track, it was quickly repaired. With the Union forces retreating without fully achieving their goal, this battle was a Confederate victory.
