This Day in Georgia Civil War History

August 16, 1863

Army of the Cumberland Advanced; Prelude to Chickamauga

The Union Army of the Cumberland, commanded by General William Rosecrans, began a general advance designed to bypass the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by General Braxton Bragg. Bragg’s army was in Chattanooga, TN and Rosecrans hoped to get behind them and threaten their supply lines, thus forcing a retreat. This campaign would ultimately result in the first major Civil War battle fought on Georgia soil - the Battle of Chickamauga. In the course of these movements there would be numerous small skirmishes as portions of the two armies would meet.
