Second Battle of Dalton Concluded
The Second Battle of Dalton concluded. Confederate General Joseph Wheeler and his cavalry had attacked the smaller Union force in Dalton the previous day, after they had refused to surrender. The Union troops withstood the attack; skirmishing continued throughout the night. Early on this morning Union infantry and cavalry arrived to relieve those in the city; Wheeler briefly engaged these forces, before withdrawing from Dalton altogether. No reliable casualty numbers are available for this small engagement, but it is considered a Union victory as the Confederates pulled back without seriously affecting the Union supply lines.
