Massive Bombardment of Atlanta Intensified

The artillery bombardment of Atlanta escalated. Union batteries began firing new 4 1/2-inch rifled cannon - each weapon firing every five minutes. Even with this Sherman complained about not hearing the guns fire enough, so the frequency of shelling increased even further. That night, Sherman wrote to one of his generals: “Let us destroy Atlanta and make it a desolation.”
