Armies on Opposite Sides of River

By this time, the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac had established lines on opposite sides of the Rappahannock River. President Abraham Lincoln was unhappy that General George Meade had not pursued General Robert E. Lee’s army more aggressively, allowing them to escape back into Virginia and into a defensive position.
