John S. Bowen Died
Savannah, Georgia-born Confederate John S. Bowen died in Mississippi. He had been in Vicksburg during the siege of that city. Ironically, he had been a friend and classmate of Union General Ulysses S. Grant, and had helped negotiate the surrender at Vicksburg. Shortly afterwards he contracted dysentery, which caused his death on this day.
