Andersonville Inmate Count Neared 30,000; Help Desperately Sought
At Camp Sumter - Andersonville prison - the number of inmates had reached close to 30,000 by this time. A message was sent to Confederate officials in Richmond desperately asking for reinforcements, claiming that the guard force at Camp Sumter was undisciplined, riddled with spies, threatening mutiny and desertion.
