This Day in Georgia Civil War History
July 04, 1864
Battle of Ruff’s Mill
Union forces advanced on Atlanta, while Confederate forces continued to fall back towards the Chattahoochee River. There were some skirmishes on this day, the most significant being southwest of Smyrna. There one Union division engaged the Confederates in the Battle of Ruff’s Mill, where the Union forces seized a line of Confederate defensive works and two advanced amid some bitter fighting. Sherman considered another frontal assault but determined that Confederate infantry and artillery were too well entrenched (as they had been at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain). So instead Sherman sent Union cavalry upstream and downstream looking for ways to cross the Chattahoochee.
