Vicksburg Asked for Terms of Surrender

On the same day as the climax of the Battle of Gettysburg, things were going no better for the Confederates at the Siege of Vicksburg. After enduring a six week siege which left his army and the citizens of Vicksburg on the verge of starvation and ravished by disease, Confederate General John Pemberton asked Union General Ulysses S. Grant for terms of surrender.
