Men Between 40-45 Urged to Volunteer for State Defense
While word of the Battle of Gettysburg or the surrender of Vicksburg had not yet reached Atlanta, there was still cause for concern over a Union army invading Georgia. On this day the Southern Confederacy printed a proclamation from Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown requesting all men between the ages of 40-45 volunteer for defense of the state, and encouraging all women make sure the men honored the request!
