Battle of Gaines’ Mill (First Cold Harbor)
The Battle of Gaines’ Mill (or First Cold Harbor) took place, in which Robert E. Lee renewed his attack on the Union lines threatening Richmond. After repeated assaults during the day, the Union line finally broke late in the afternoon. This battle forced Union General George McClellan to abandon his plan to capture Richmond; he began retreating back up the peninsula his forces had marched up during the spring.
