Battle of Mechanicsville
The Battle of Mechanicsville, part of the Seven Days Battle, took place. Robert E. Lee hoped to crush one of the Union flanks, but Stonewall Jackson was late in arriving after marching his men from the Shenandoah Valley. The Confederate attacked without him, but were unable to break the Union lines. They did fall back however, and Union General George McClellan began to think he was outnumbered, although in reality he had the far larger army.
