Seven Days Battle Began

A series of confrontations known as the Seven Days Battle began near Mechanicsville, VA as the Army of the Potomac began advancing towards Richmond. The movement was soon interrupted by furious Confederate resistance, which General Robert E. Lee hoped would stall the advance until Stonewall Jackson and his troops could arrive from the Shenandoah Valley.
