Stand Watie Last Confederate General to Surrender

Cherokee Stand Watie surrendered his forces in Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma; he was the last Confederate general to do so. Watie had been born in Georgia, but was forced to the west, with most other Cherokees, on the Trail of Tears.
