This Day in Georgia Civil War History

June 18, 1864

Battle of Petersburg Ended; Siege Began

The Battle of Petersburg concluded on this day. The Union forces attacking the city continued their assault, but reinforcements from General Robert E. Lee’s had arrived the previous day, and drove back the Union assault with heavy casualties. The Confederates were soon too well entrenched to to be driven out of the city, so a long (nine month) siege of Petersburg began. The Petersburg Campaign would be the final act of the Civil War to be fought in Virginia.
