Leonidas Polk Killed on Pine Mountain
There was no battle in the Atlanta Campaign on this day, but there was a casualty. Confederate General Leonidas Polk rode to the top of Pine Mountain, located northwest of Marietta, to scout the Union positions. While atop the mountain, the popular general was killed instantly when a Union cannon projectile struck him directly. Polk was unique among the Confederate military leaders, in that he was also an Episcopal bishop before the war.
