Battle of Cold Harbor Began
The Battle of Cold Harbor began in Virginia. This was one of the more lopsided battles in the war, with Union assaults on well fortified Confederate lines resulting in massive casualties, with little to no advantage being gained. Union General Ulysses S. Grant later expressed regret at sending so many men to their death. It was also the last major military victory for the South during the Civil War. On this first day cavalry skirmishing occurred near Cold Harbor, with neither side gaining an advantage, while both called for reinforcements after nightfall.
