Siege of Vicksburg Began
The Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi began. The defenses at Vicksburg were designed, and their construction overseen, by Martin L. Smith, one of the few Northern born generals to fight for the South. Although born in New York, he spent most of his military career, and subsequent life, in the South, much of it in Georgia. He married a woman from Athens, Georgia, and is buried in Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens - the same cemetery that holds the remains of T.R.R. Cobb and Howell Cobb.
