Union Army Gathered, Confederates Moved Toward Chancellorsville

Two more Corps of the Army of the Potomac crossed the Rappahannock River. General Joseph Hooker then reunited the entire right wing of his army near the wilderness surrounding Chancellorsville. Meanwhile, Confederate cavalry leader General J.E.B. Stuart had been following the movements of the Union armies, and reporting back to General Robert E. Lee on their strength. On this day Lee left a small detachment of his Army of Northern Virginia at Fredericksburg and moved toward Chancellorsville to meet the Union army.
